What is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy is a cutting-edge approach that combines the therapeutic benefits of ketamine with psychotherapy to support healing and personal growth. Unlike traditional antidepressants, which may take weeks to work, ketamine often provides rapid relief from symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma.
During a session, ketamine is typically administered via intramuscular injection. While it induces a temporary altered state of consciousness, our clinicians guide and support you, helping integrate insights for lasting change.
For depression, anxiety and trauma-related disorders:
Depression: Rapid relief from low mood, hopelessness, and lethargy, especially when other treatments have failed.
Anxiety: Reduces worry, panic, and tension, promoting calm and relaxation.
Trauma/PTSD: Facilitates emotional processing and memory reconsolidation, helping reduce hyperarousal and avoidance.
Our approach combines psychiatry, psychology, and psychedelic therapy research. Joy In Health, safety, compassion, and personalized care are our priorities. Every session is conducted under medical supervision by a team trained in both ketamine administration and psychotherapeutic techniques.
Our program: Creating a “timeline” graphic
1.
A comprehensive assessment with Dr. Marni Chanoff with collaboration with your usual treatment team.
2.
Preparation psychotherapy, usually 1-3 sessions with a therapist on our team.
3.
3-hour guided ketamine assisted psychotherapy, intramuscular ketamine administered with medical supervision throughout the whole experience
4.
Integration psychotherapy in the next few days following your ketamine session
5.
Alternating ketamine and integration sessions going forward, usually 3-6 ketamine sessions over a timeline that’s right for you.
Exploring the Role of Psychotherapy in Ketamine Treatment
As conversations around treatments like ketamine and esketamine (Spravato) continue to expand, many patients and providers are asking a crucial question: can ketamine treat depression, anxiety, and trauma disorders in a durable way?
Marni Chanoff had the opportunity to join colleagues from Cambridge Health Alliance and Harvard Medical School for a conference focused on psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy to present our integrative and collaborative KAP model of care.

“I had the recent opportunity to sit in on one of our Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy sessions and I witnessed just how transformative integration can be when approached creatively.
After sitting with the client before her ketamine experience—discussing her intentions, emotions, and life circumstances—and then holding space while she experienced the medicine, we moved into integration in a unique way.
We helped her create a map of her inner world—people, places, emotions, themes—all interconnected. This allowed her to gain insights, recognize patterns, and create meaning in real time. The process was dynamic, interactive, and incredibly illuminating—a true embodiment of what integrative care can be.”
