Exploring the Role of Psychotherapy in Ketamine Treatment
As conversations around treatments like ketamine and esketamine (Spravato) continue to expand, many patients and providers are asking a crucial question: can ketamine treat depression, anxiety, and trauma disorders in a durable way?
While medication alone can provide important symptom relief, Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is designed to support deeper psychological integration and more sustained change.
The Window of Neuroplasticity
Ketamine appears to create a temporary period of increased neuroplasticity and psychological flexibility. Within this unique therapeutic window, longstanding patterns often become much more open to change. However, without therapeutic support, the insights and shifts experienced during a session may fade before they can become fully integrated into daily life.
In Joy In Health's KAP model, this window is approached thoughtfully and collaboratively. By combining the medication with preparation, ongoing psychotherapy, and integration work, individuals are supported in better understanding their emotional patterns, developing new perspectives, and achieving meaningful interpersonal and behavioral change over time.
What the Research Shows
Clinical research increasingly supports what we have observed over four years of providing KAP: integrating psychotherapy with ketamine treatment plays a vital role in sustaining positive changes.
A comprehensive 2023 systematic review (Kew et al.) found that although standalone ketamine treatments may lead to meaningful short-term improvement, those benefits can diminish within weeks for some individuals. Emerging evidence suggests that combining ketamine with psychotherapy extends and stabilizes those gains by reducing the likelihood of relapse and supporting deeper psychological integration.
Making KAP More Accessible
We recognize that this high level of individualized care can present financial challenges for some individuals and families. Because expanding thoughtful and ethically grounded access to care is incredibly important to us, we have established a partnership with Thank You Life, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing financial barriers to psychedelic-assisted therapy. Through this partnership, we are grateful to offer a sliding-scale scholarship program for qualifying individuals.
Advancing the Field of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy
We are also dedicated to advancing the clinical standards of this evolving field. Recently, Marni Chanoff had the opportunity to join colleagues from Cambridge Health Alliance and Harvard Medical School for a conference focused on psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy to present our integrative and collaborative KAP model of care.
